Because of its location in the middle of the three valleys that make up the 132km Monterosa piste network, this is a great place to base yourself.

From the edge of town, the chairlift to Punta Jolanda or a bus gets you to Stafal and the main link between neighbouring Champoluc to the west and Alagna to the east. There is lots of great on piste cruising on offer, but the real attraction is the lift served off piste – which has to be some of the best in Italy.

On the Slopes

There is a decent beginner zone on the fringes of Gressoney, but this really is a resort for intermediates upwards. Fans of piste skiing will enjoy the reds above Seehorn and towards the lofty Passo Salati at 2,971m on the Alagna side of the valley and the long runs over to Champoluc are also a must. Just watch out for the steeper black G6 above Stafal – in bad snow conditions it may be worth downloading the gondola to get across towards Champoluc.

It is for advanced and expert skiers and boarders that this resort really comes into its own however. The jewel in the crown is Punta Indren, where long off piste runs drop down over 1,000m. Hiring a mountain guide or joining a Ski Club Freshtracks holiday here will ensure you make the most of the terrain, which expands into a vast playground if you have a set of touring skins. Another bonus here is that the snow often remains untracked for longer – crowds are almost unheard of.

In the Resort

Gressoney is a traditional Italian mountain village, with an attractive cobbled centre that is dominated by old wooden buildings. A slight issue is the only lift directly from town is a slow two-man chair up to Punta Jolanda – you may want to consider catching the bus up to the lift hub at Stafal instead.

There are a few hotels up by Stafal and the main lifts, but there is very little else, especially on the evening activity front. Gressoney itself is also quiet, but there is a better choice of atmospheric bars, good restaurants and small shops – just don’t come here expecting raucous parties and late nights.

Getting to Gressoney la Trinité

Milan Malpensa is just under two hours away from Gressoney, whilst the city’s other airport, Linate, lies on the other side of the city – the drive takes around two and a half hours, depending on traffic. Turin airport is also around two and a half hours away.

The Monterosa Ski Area employs dynamic pricing, with the topline rate varying between €38 and €67 per day, depending on time of year, day, and demand. Discounts off this topline day rate are available the further you book in advance, when booking online, and booking consecutive days.

You can use your Ski Club Membership card to load your Monterosa Ski Area lift ticket, either online or at the ticket office, and avoid the €2 fee for purchasing a new RFID card from the resort. More details can be found here.

Following a great weekend for the Italian Alps, the New Year dawns fine, dry and bright across the region thanks to high pressure. This moves away as the week continues, with cold and more unsettled weather eventually moving in.

The southwest will see around 15cm of snow fall in steady flurries over Friday, Saturday and Sunday; this will grow to a foot in the northwestern Italian Alps. A slower start in the Dolomites will see at least 20cm down on Sunday with more predicted outside this forecast period into the new week.

The freezing line will remain around 2,000m, dropping to 1,500m in places, before dropping off a cliff on Monday morning ensuring this snowfall – and the snow following into the new week – hits all elevations and remains there.
